Medicare Part D means important changes for The Guilford Center’s consumers.

Anyone who currently has Medicare Part A and/or Part B, including people who have both Medicare and Medicaid, can join a Medicare prescription drug plan in their area. Enrollment began November 15, 2005 and lasts through May 15, 2006. The Part D program pays for prescription drug costs similar to other insurance plans. The amount covered depends on the plan and the prescription. Consumers will pay a small monthly fee, or premium, for the plan and a copayment, or coinsurance fee, for each prescription. Consumers may qualify for the “Extra Help” program to assist them in paying for premiums, copayments, and coinsurance fees if they apply for the program through Social Security. The Guilford Center will not be able to supply consumers with free medications from drug companies if they qualify for assistance with Medicare D premiums but have not applied. Therefore, beginning in 2006, these consumers will have to buy their own prescriptions. Consumers can call 1-800-772-1213 to apply for the “Extra Help” program. More information about Medicare Part D can be obtained either by calling 1-800-633-4227, or by logging on to www.medicare.gov.
